Abstract
:
Objective:The aim of our study is to investigate the frequency of radiological changes of the hands and the feet in a well-defined hospital population of patients with rheumatoid arthritis in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and to compare it with the other available data inside the Kingdome and at the Western countries. Method: A total of 57 patients who fulfilled the 1987 criteria for the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis were randomly chosen from the rheumatology outpatient clinic at King Abdulaziz University Hospital in Jeddah, Kingdome of Saudi Arabia during the period of June until December 2007. Their X-Ray changes of the hands and the feet were reviewed thoroughly and the frequency of the radiological changes were recorded . Results:The mean disease duration at the time of the study was 7.3 + 4.2 years . From the 57 rheumatoid arthritis patients, erosions occurred in 60%, periarticular osteopenia in 34%. Deformity and soft tissue swelling were present in 26% and 14% of the patients respectively. Conclusion: Radiological changes in the hands and the feet for rheumatoid arthritis patient at Jeddah, Saudi Arabia are present in a substantial proportion of the patients as erosions were found in 60% of the patients, which is less than the data reported at the Western
