Abstract |

Pregnancy is a unique condition in which the maternal metabolism is directed to support the fetoplacental extraction of nutrients for maintaining fetal growth. This study was carried out aiming to determine the levels of leptin, some pregnancy hormones (adiponectin, resistin, cortisol, progesterone and estradiol) and vitamin D as well in healthy pregnant Saudi females during different stages of pregnancy. The serum levels of sodium, potassium, chloride, urea, creatinine, glucose and complete blood cells count (CBC) composition were also measured. Thirty six pregnant females were enrolled in the study 1st trimester (GI), 2nd trimester (GII) and 3rd trimester (GIII) and 12 healthy non-pregnant females were used as control group (C). Fasting blood samples were collected at early morning from all pregnant and non-pregnant subjects.
Result of this study showed that leptin serum level were significantly increased in pregnant women of GII and GIII while a non significant increase was found in GI as compared to control. Adiponectin, progesterone, estradiol and vitamin D serum level showed a very highly significant increase in pregnant women GI, GII and GIII. Resistin and cortisol serum level showed a very highly significant increase in pregnant women GII and GIII as compared to control but a non significant increase was found in pregnant women GI. Sodium serum level showed a highly significant increase in pregnant women Gll and Glll and a significant increase was found in pregnant women Gl. Potassium serum level showed a highly significant increase in pregnant women Gll and a non significant increase was found in pregnant women Gl and Glll. Chloride serum level showed a non significant increase was found in pregnant women Gl, Gll and Glll.
Urea, creatinine and glucose serum levels showed a non significant increased was found in pregnant women Gl, Gll and Glll. There was non significant differences in complete blood cells count (CBC) composition between the pregnant and non pregnant groups. On the other hand, a significant increase in Red cell distribution (RDW) was found in GI and GII and highly significant increase in GIII. Correlation studies showed that positive correlation between resistin and 1,25 (OH)2D vitamin D in 2nd trimester is significant (r= 0.05) and positive correlation between leptin and resistin in 3rd trimester is significant (r=0.05). Serum leptin showed a significant negative coorelation with adiponectin in 3rd trimester (r=0.05) while, the correlation between leptin and resistin in 3rd trimester is significant positive (r=0.01). So, This study recommend that women with greater exposure of skin to sunlight, greater fortification of food items with vitamin D, and vitamin D supplementation. The study also, recommends that pregnant women need for periodic follow-up with a specialist doctor |
