Abstract
:
The present study aimd to study the temporal and spatial distribution of brachyuran leucosiid larvae in relation to some ecological factors including salinity and temperature in the Al-Kharrar creek, the central Red Sea. Monthly zooplankton samples were collected at seven stations in Al-Kharrar creek for one year from July, 2009 to June, 2010. Two species with their larval stages were corresponded and identified, (P1) Philyra cf. syndactyle which is first time this species has been recorded from the Red Sea, and L2 : Leucosia anatum. Three leucosiid species could only be identified to generic level only due to the lack of available literature. The first, L1 Leucosia sp. which was similar to Leucosia sima. No published data was found to identify the second species (P2) here identified as Philyra sp. while P3 was considered to be Arcania sp. with a possible identification of A.longata. Philyra sp P2 was similar of P.cf. syndactyle but had some variable characters such as length of spines carapace and shape of telson. Leucosiidae larvae (except Arcania sp.P3) occurred throughout the year, showing that reproduction is continuous, but that larval input in planktonic community were significantly higher during in late winter and early spring. For the first time, four stages of G. albolinaeatus and first stage of Geograpsus crinipes reared under laboratory condition were described from the central Red Sea.
