Abstract
:
The study shed light on the possibility of employing the modern technology of RS and GIS to the environment of Jeddah city to evaluate their efficiency as well as processing and classification operations that suit best the identification and extraction of plant communities in the city for the year 1431 (2010). The objective of the study is to study and analyze the current status of green spaces using SPOT5 data of 2010. The main methods used for defining and extracting green spaces were visual interpretation, NDVI, and supervised classification. It appeared that the most suitable of these for current study was the supervised classification. Data extracted were processed using functions from both software to make such data suitable for further geographic analysis and comparable with other information acquired from Jeddah municipality and the Farsi GeoTech. The study consisted of five chapters. The first one is the framework of the study, whereas the second one is covering the green spaces in Jeddah city. The third chapter dealt with the principals of vegetation remote sensing and digital processing for detecting plant. The following chapter aimed at identification and extracting plant and conducting the comparison and analysis. Finally, the fifth chapter contained study results and recommendations. The results showed clearly the effectiveness and the ability of remote sensing and geographic information systems to extract the plant from an environment like the city of Jeddah, especially when using data with the most suitable characteristics. The study showed also that there are differences between the available data and data extracted from satellite data. The study concluded with some recommendations about the use of remote sensing in studying green spaces within the environment of Jeddah city, and building geographic databases.
