Abstract
:
Pragmatics is considered one the most important tools offered by modern linguistics to investigate meaning. These tools were not entirely absent from the minds of our old scholars who although did not devote independent books dealing with its issues and detailing its topics. However, we find them apply its procedures from time to time in interpreting texts, and stress its importance in evaluating various views and possible interpretations. From this comes the importance of this study, which aims to detect the early achievements of our old scholars in this field, and especially the efforts of Qur'an commentators in this area. Investigating the pragmatic dimensions touched upon in the Exegeses of al-Zamakhshari, and Ibn ‘Aṭiyyah, such as Deixis and speech acts, in the suras of al-baqarah and āl ‘imaran, reveal the great efforts given by those to explore all possible ways and methods to get into the intended meanings of the text of the Qur'an. We find them achieve this by bring into the frame of meaning whatever could contributes to comprehending the contextual meaning. The research follows descriptive and analytical methods to monitor deictics and speech acts, and to disclose the efforts of al-Zamakhshari, and Ibn ‘Aṭiyyah in exposing texts meaning by using pragmatic tools. The results of this research showed that analyzing and investigating a number of Quranic text interpretations allow us to discover the mechanisms used by each of them in comprehending all the components that form the intended pragmatical meanings of the texts. This process showed us that old Arab scholars in general and Quranic commentators in particular were aware of many of the pragmatic issues involved in this process. We find al-Zamakhshari and Ibn ῾Aṭiyyah pay a great attention in investigating the referents of deixis whether within the text or out of the text. Also they exerted a great deal of attention to investigate and determine the intended meanings of the different speech acts in the text. These results support our initial tow hypothesis: there were a great number of pragmatic issues that were on the mind of old Arab scholars who dealt with text interpretations especially Qur'nic scholars and commentators.
