Abstract
:
Dam site is an important part of dam protection. An old dam was built in an ideal location a major more than 40 years ago and was functioning well in protecting part of the city area downstream. With the fast expansion of the city in mid 80’s, the developers leveled the wadi in the upstream side of the dam and constructed more than 30 villas and buildings that is known later as Umm al Khair, but in the same time they kept the dam in its original place. The flood of 2010 proved that it was a big mistake to built that district in that particular place without removing the dam. The residents and houses in Umm al-Khair were badly affected simply because it is in the dam lake. Following the 2010 flood, un proficient modification to the dam lead to its failure in the next flood in 2011, shifting the damage this time to the downstream side as well. The authorities realize that it is time to built another large size dam just to the east of Umm al Khair to stop the flood hazardin this district and the area downstream. The soil under the new dam is of good quality, the density is about 2t/m3 and the SPT value ranges from 8 to 25. The strength of the foundation soil is enough to support the dam weight. The flood hazard in the study area is minimized greatly. The dam reservoir is big enough to hold flood water of 100 year return period in that area. The water flow through the dam outlet is matching the capability of the open channel downstream, and can drain water safely in about 2 days.
