Abstract
:
Twenty five sediment samples were collected from five sites in Jeddah coast, Red sea to assess the concentration levels of hydrocarbons. Total concentration of aliphatic hydrocarbons from C11 to C30 were ranged from 2.18 to 492 μg/g dry weight. The finer grain size fractions of sediments ( Mud ) contain higher concentrations of hydrocarbons, while the coarse fractions ( sand and gravel) contain lower concentrations of hydrocarbons. The level of extractable organic matter (EOM) concentrations in the surface sediments, from Jeddah coast, varied greatly by several orders of magnitude, and ranged between 514.4 μg/g (station 4) - 12540 μg/g (station 8). The total petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations in this study were varying between 4.9 to 652.6 µg/g dry weight. The highest concentrations were recorded in the semi closed lagoon Al-Arbaeen which is highly influenced by sewage dumping. C26 recorded the highest value (63.09μg/g) for aliphatic hydrocarbons in station 9, Al-Shabab lagoon. The descending order of concentration levels for aliphatic hydrocarbons in different sites was: Al-Arbaeen lagoon (354.4 μg/g) > Al-Shabab lagoon ( 285.4 μg/g) > Southern Corniche ( 145.9 μg/g) > Northern Corniche ( 135.4 μg/g) > Obhur ( 17.7 μg/g). The total poly aromatic hydrocarbon concentrations recorded lower values than aliphatic hydrocarbons, which ranged between 2.67-160.6 μg/g dry weight.
