Abstract
:
This case study evaluates the MARZ content management system used in King Abdul-Aziz University (KAU), Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), from the perspective of the academic staff. Therefore, the research addresses the following research questions: To what extent do academic staff use (MARZ at KAU? What are the main constraints for not using it adequately? Accordingly, the following aim has been identified for the study: To explore the main properties and potential of MARZ at KAU. In order to try and understand the obstacles preventing academic staff from using the system in tasks that might require it, data were collected using questionnaires (from 350 academic staff, out of a total number of 3634). The sample was randomly selected, representing around (9.6%) of the total number of staff. The study found that properties exist in a range of 62.5% to 100%. The lowest percentage appeared to be publishing (62.50%), followed by compatibility (63.88 %) and system support for content retrieval (80%). However, the highest number of properties was from system support for editing content (92%), followed by system support for users and levels of security (100%). The results also reveal that the commonest users of the system are staff at the level of teaching assistant (24.5%, 37%). On the other hand, the College of Science showed the highest number of users (21.41%) and the non-Saudi staff were more accepting of the system than the Saudi staff, by 61.85%. The age of the users ranged between 30 and 40 years and the total number in this study sample amounted to around 80%. It was also found that the main constraints on using the system involved limited knowledge of its use (51%). This was followed by insufficient training sessions in the system’s use (42%). However, the complexity of the system registered the lowest percentage, namely 19%. The study came up with recommendations to encourage academic staff to use the system with financial rewards, as well as supporting them with training courses and updating the system as part of the University’s IT services. The study also recommends KAU establish a proper strategy to construct digital content and use the scale developed in this study to measure the effectiveness of the system.
