The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of fish oil and grapeseed oil on male rats exposed to cadmium. Rats were distributed into six groups. Rats of the first group were served as normal controls. Rats of the second group were exposed to cadmium. Rats of the third group were administered with fish oil and exposed to cadmium. Rats of the fourth group were administered with grapeseed oil and treated with cadmium. Rats of the fifth group were, treated with fish oil. Rats of the sixth group were supplemented with grapeseed oil. In rats treated with only cadmium, significant changes of blood alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, albumin, glucose, triglycerides, cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, very low density lipoprotein cholesterol, creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, uric acid, creatine kinase , lactate dehydrogenase, red blood cell count, hemoglobin, hematocrit, white blood cell count and white blood cell differential count. Additionally, significant changes in the levels of T cell, B cell, immunoglobulin A, immunoglobulin G, interleukin-2, interleukin-6 and interleukin-10 were observed. Furthemore, highly significant alterations in the values of liver glutathione, superoxide dismutase and malondialdehyde were noted in rats treated with only cadmium. Moreover, histopathological examinations of liver, kidney and testis showed severe changes. Treatment of rats with fish oil and grapeseed oil showed a pronounced attenuation in rats exposed to cadmium associated with physiological, immunological and histopathological alterations. Furthermore, the most improvements were noted in rats subjected fish oil followed by grapeseed oil. Finally, this study confirmed that the protective effects of these oils are attributed to the antioxidant activities of its active constituents. |
