Abstract
:
Abstract This mixed method study aims to investigate the effectiveness of applying scaffolding strategies in enhancing reading comprehension skills of female students at King Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia. The participants were 33 female students at King AbdulAziz University in Jeddah at their preparatory year level 104 (B1/Threshold level on the Common European Framework of reference for language; CEFR). The subjects of the study were assigned into two groups: 17 in the Control group and 16 in the Experimental group. Both groups were exposed to the same reading lessons. However, the experimental group was exposed to scaffolding strategies while the control group carried on their regular way of teaching. Prior to the treatment, a pretest was administered to both groups. The treatment took 6 weeks and the researcher met with the experimental group two or three times a week for an hour per session depending on their schedule. The researcher covered 15 hours for the whole experiment including the pre/post testing. Once the treatment was accomplished a posttest was administered to investigate the effect of applying scaffolding strategies on developing reading comprehension skills. Furthermore, to delve into students’ perceptions regarding the experiment, a qualitative data was collected via open-ended questionnaire. The main findings of the study showed that: 1. There was a statistically significant difference between the pretest and posttest of the experimental group in favor of the posttest. 2. There was no statistically significant difference between the pretest and posttest of the control group. 3. The student demonstrated their satisfaction regarding the application of scaffolding strategies to improve their reading comprehension. 4. From the students’ perception, the most useful scaffolding strategy was questioning.
