Abstract

This research aimed to measure the knowledge that university's students have about intellectual security and detect the cognitive, emotional and behavioral influences on the intellectual security resulting from the use of new media applications, besides monitoring and analysis the rate of the use of university's youth for new media applications and what application they use the most. Descriptive methodology was used to achieve the objectives of this study, and a survey questionnaire was designed as a tool to collect data from the sample that consisted of 634 females and 424 males in various scientific and art majors. The findings of the study show that most of the respondents (79%) agreed to acquire information and skills related to intellectual security, and that the new media applications are an appropriate mean to spread awareness about intellectual security by obtaining approval rate (78%), also the results proved that new media applications were able to create a public sphere for young that impact on their intellectual security; where (78%) of the university youth -study sample- said that the applications helping them to identify the culture of the other. The study showed that the cognitive effects is the first influencer that effects on intellectual security (65%), then the emotional effects (58%), while the behavioral effects ranked last (43%). The study concluded that there is a weak inverse relationship between the rate of use of university's youth to the new media applications and the concept of intellectual security. The study recommended using new media applications - especially social networks - to promote intellectual security, Islamic and national values, and to establish a media project that aims to define and developing the intellectual security in Saudi society, also to raise awareness about the harmful physical and mental effects of the frequent use of new media applications, and advocating to minimize that use and ensure direct social communication.
