Abstract
:
Promoting critical thinking in speaking via TED Talks and movie clips in the Saudi EFL context Critical thinking courses have been recently added to curricula at Saudi universities because of the need to increase the number of graduates with the crucial skills required by the labor market (AlWehaibi, 2011). Having graduates with critical thinking skills, that is, who are able to reason well and make sound judgments, will make a huge contribution to development of a more civilized society (Barnett, 1997). In the light of the tremendous changes Saudi Arabia is going through (‘Vision 2030’), educational institutes must find ways to promote critical thinking skills within the EFL curriculum. This study seeks to explore the effect of coursework designed to promote critical thinking on students’ development of critical thinking skills and speaking skills. The classroom intervention makes use of ‘TED Talks’ and movie clips as part of a mixed methods design. For the qualitative data, pre- and post- semi-structured focus group interviews were conducted. Pre- and post- tests of speaking skills provided the quantitative data. Participants were female students from the foundation year at Yanbu University College in Yanbu, Saudi Arabia. Results of the pre-/post- focus group interviews the study suggested that TED Talks and movie clips can enhance critical thinking skills. However, results of pre-/post- tests of speaking ability were not statistically significantly different. This could be due to two factors: unexpected reduction of classes that led to less exposure than planned to the authentic materials and students’ anxiety in relation to exams and deadlines to meet for assignments and projects. Nevertheless, the findings of this study can be beneficial for EFL teachers seeking to find better means to integrate critical thinking skills within the EFL curriculum.
