Abstract
:
Background Diabetes mellitus is affecting a huge percentage of the population in the world. A disease usually accompanied by the risk of development of foot complication that may lead to amputation . Therefore, diabetes mellitus patients are advised to ensure that they take proper care of their feet to evade these problems. Aim The following study aimed to determine the effectiveness of a concept map as diabetic foot care educational intervention among type 2 diabetic patients. Setting: The study was carried out at the outpatient department - Diabetic and Endocrine Centre in Al Madinah, Al-Munawara, Saudi Arabia. Design: A quasi-experimental design was utilized. Sample: a purposeful sample of seventy patients was selected and alienated into two equal groups control group(=35) and study group(=35) subjects. Method: Control group received the traditional diabetes education from the diabetic clinic and study group received educational session about foot care (concept map) along with conventional diabetes education from the diabetic clinic. Tools: Questionnaires and interviews conducted in data collection. The sample patients were also asked to answer several questions regarding their foot care practices. Results: The results showed that Mean score of the foot care self-efficiency of the study group before concept map as intervention was 52.02 and it was significantly increased to 89.64 after concept map as educational intervention. In the control group mean score of before using concept map was 53.93 and in the after using concept map it was slightly increased to 58.23.The calculated Mean score of the foot care behavior of the study group before using the concept map was 61.50 and it was significantly increased to 88.86 in after using the concept map. Conclusion and recommendation The study concluded that the concept mapping was very useful educational tool for nurse and patients in self-efficient foot care practices and helped to enlighten the patients on their condition. This study also presented that the number of patients that were not aware of the effects of poor foot care practices was high, but significantly reduced after concept map got implemented.
