Abstract
:
Objectives: The aim of this in vitro investigation is to compare two different techniques of white spot lesion remineralization using bioglass 45S5 and opal seal. Also, to compare protective effect of bioglass 45S5 and opal seal after remineralization. Methods: WSL was induced in a sample of 60 enamel blocks by storage in acid challenge with pH 4.5 for four days. The specimens were equally divided into six groups Opal seal groups (group I and group II), Bioglass groups (group III and group IV), and control groups (group V and group VI). Opal seal was applied on group I and group II following the manufacturer instruction and 45S5 Bioglass was applied on group III and group IV. Control groups (group V and group VI) received no treatment. All the groups were stored in artificial saliva for 24 hours. Group II group IV and group VI exposed to acid challenge again for 4 days in decalcifying solution after application of the remineralizing agents to test the progression of white spot lesions. All the specimens were sectioned and thinned to 140 μm. TMR images were taken on a high precision x-ray glass film from all specimens using x-ray generator (CMR2; Softex, Tokyo, Japan). The mineral loss and lesion depth were quantified. Data was analyzed using one-way ANOVA test p<0.05. Results: Bioglass treatment group significantly had lower lesion depth (70.19 μm ± 29.21) when compared to control group (115.75 μm ± 19.98) and the OS treatment group (123.58 μm ± 21.19) p<0.05. Bioglass group had a significant decrease in the mineral loss (∆Z) (732.15 ± 210.16) of when compared to control group (3472.69 ± 738.38) and the OS treatment group (2878.85 ± 681.22) p<0.05. Opal seal application had no effect on mineral density and lesion depth compared with control group (p > 0.05). Conclusions: 45S5 bioglass application can remineralize white spot lesions prior to the bonding of metallic orthodontic brackets.
