Abstract
:
This research study is a qualitative thesis that attempts to shed some light on the impact of videogames and their adjacent attachments on English language learning through self-centred attitudinal and aptitudinal factors involving learning autonomy and motivation driven by the vehicle of gaming. The method adopted throughout the thesis is autoethnography which puts forth to the reader my outside classroom learning experience as a gamer in the first-place mastering English as EFL and ESP. It’s desired to share evidence through my personal recounts and the three theoretical frameworks selected that gaming realm have in my case contributed directly in the formulation of my English language acquisition. The research paradigm utilized is interpretive of which I attempt to make a meaning out of my language learning experience through entertainment phenomena. It’s also proven in the written piece that learning through entertainment is an impactful wheel to steer the learning process towards learning independence. In the thesis, I study myself through exploration of over fifteen years of consistent learning through gaming. Later in the thesis, the study shifts to another type of interest which is also related to gaming that is developing my own computer machine which made me leap to offline and online community to learn English from on the equal footing. As part of autoethnography data collection, data was gathered through memory recall and further solidified by screen captures taken from past learning situations through games and PC assembly. It also contains samples from excerpts taken from in-game texts, forums texts and gaming websites reviews where I used to fortify my English repertoire. My goal in this self-explorative research is to put emphasis on interest and how it enables faster and more interesting methods to learn English Keywords: Videogames, Autonomy, Autoethnography, Community of Practice, EFL.
