Abstract
:
Background: The current healthcare system requires individuals who are capable to work independently, be initiative, make decisions responsibly in order to work effectively. In this context, the concept of self-leadership and emotional intelligence has been linked to professional and personal effectiveness. Aim: To identify the relationship between self-leadership and emotional intelligence among staff nurses. Methodology: A descriptive correlational, cross-sectional design was conducted. Convenience sampling technique was implemented to collect the needed data using self -report questionnaires. Self-leadership and emotional intelligence were measured using the Abbreviated self-leadership questionnaire, and the Wong Emotional Intelligence Scale. The total sample size was 158 registered nurses from King Abdulaziz University Hospital. Results: This study revealed a statistically significant positive relationship between self-leadership and emotional intelligence. Conclusion and recommendation: Self-leadership was related to emotional intelligence by which both used self-regulation and shared several commonalities regarding different work outcomes. Saudi nurses need to be trained regarding how to demonstrate self-leadership and emotional intelligence as this might assist them in leadership development.
