Abstract
:
This study aimed at examining the perceptions of English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers regarding the effectiveness of an online professional development (OPD) program provided by a Saudi university. The program lasted for almost a year; it consisted of different courses on teaching the English language. The study followed a mixed-methods design to collect the data and answer the research questions of the study. First, the researcher conducted semi-structured interviews to obtain background information on the OPD program and facilitate the development of the questionnaire. Second, an online questionnaire that included a Likert scale was sent to the teachers to examine their perceptions of the effectiveness of the program by exploring their perceptions of the significant features of the program, their learning in the program and their use of the new knowledge and skills. Two open-ended questions were included in the online questionnaire to explore the obstacles that the teachers faced in the program and their suggestions for improving future OPD. The findings revealed limited positive perceptions, learning and use of new skills and knowledge. This might be because of the obstacles that the teachers faced during their online experience. They mentioned facing some different obstacles such as an inflexible interface, insufficient duration, irrelevant content to their needs and preferences and lack of interaction. Regarding the teachers’ suggestions for improving future OPD, they suggested providing more relevant topics, sufficient duration, interactive courses and an attractive and flexible interface. Finally, when designing new programs, providers of OPD need to consider teachers’ needs and preferences and the obstacles that they face. A needs analysis might be helpful for discovering their needs and preferences as well as the solutions for the obstacles that they face.
