Abstract
:
One of the procedures taken by the Saudi government to improve healthcare sector is to launch the Central Board for Accreditation of Healthcare Institutions (CBAHI). It's expected that accreditation has positive impact on various aspects of the operations of an organization, including work procedures, product/service quality, employees and managers culture, human performance and safety, communication, etc. So, the purpose of this research was evaluating Saudi accreditation impact on the occupational safety culture and work conditions in the accredited hospitals compared with non-accredited hospitals. In this research, two types of questionnaires which are safety culture questionnaire (SCQ) and work conditions questionnaire (WCQ) were distributed to the staff of a sample of both accredited and non-accredited hospitals. SCQ was designed to include 6 dimensions which are management commitment (MC), training and awareness (TR), communication (COM), supportive environments (SUP), personal priorities and risk appreciation (PPR) and work environment (WE). WCQ was a modified version of the job content questionnaire (JCQ) that was based on the Job Demand - Control - Support model. The WCQ consisted of three main dimensions which are decision latitude represented by skill discretion (SKLD) and decision authority (DECD); job demands represented by psychological demands (PSCD) and physical demands (PHYD); and social support represented by supervisors' support (SSUP) and co-workers support (WSUP). Results of the questionnaires showed higher scores in non-accredited than accredited hospitals in most of the dimensions of both safety culture and work conditions. These results indicate that there no observed impact for accreditation on safety culture and work conditions aspects. The most observable differences were found in management commitment (MC) to safety and physical demands (PHYD), both were scored better in non-accredited hospitals. In spite of these, details analysis shows that the implemented system in the accredited hospitals needs some modifications to improve performance and to get the advantage of accreditation. Finally, CBAHI accreditation system is very qualified system to improve quality of healthcare sector in Saudi Arabia. However, more attention should be given to the occupational safety and wellbeing aspects in its detailed guidelines of implementation.
