Background: Stigma-by-association regarding mental health affects not only people with mental problems and psychiatric patients or their families, but also nurses working in the mental health units. Stigma-by-association among nurses working in mental health units can lead to some nurses feeling ashamed and embarrassed when discussing their work. Aim: To assess stigma-by-association among nurses working in mental health units. Design: Descriptive, cross-sectional design was utilized. Setting: Registered nurses was recruited from both governmental and private hospitals in Jeddah city. The hospitals were included, psychiatric and mental health hospitals (MOH) and private general hospitals with psychiatric units ((DR/Soliman Fakeeh and Erfan hospitals)-Jeddah city. Sample: A convenience sample technique was implemented. The data were collected from 160 registered nurses working in mental health units. Tool: An 18-item Clinician Associative Stigma Scale (CASS) was used to measure stigma-by-association among nurses working in mental health units. In addition, two open ended questions to measure suggestions and embarrassing situations of nurses working in mental health units about stigma -by- association. Results: The result found in the current study that there are embarrassing situations among nurses working in mental health units that have caused the stigma by associated with them. Also, the nurses have put forward some suggestions that could help reduce the accompanying stigma. In addition, there was a statistically significant difference when they have heard other people say that the work, we do is easy/could be done by anyone. Conclusion: This study concludes that the nurses working in mental health units in both government and private hospitals had a moderate level of stigma-by-association. Stigma by association among nurses who working in mental health units have also been found to be related to age and years of experience. Moreover, the experience of stigma by association among nurses who working with mentally ill patients in Saudi Arabia is common. Recommendations: Highlighting success stories and experiences through psychiatry workshops could help nurses working in the mental health field. Future research is required to replicate the study in different cities in Saudi Arabia with the aim of generalising the results.
