Abstract
:
This research aimed at investigating the effect of improving language communication environment on caregivers using the third edition of Infant-toddler Environment Rating Scale (ITERS 3). The study adopted the action research approach, where the study sample comprised three infant/toddler classrooms in the Childhood Studies Center, at King Abdulaziz University, in Jeddah, these classrooms as follows: infants (1 month- 1 year), toddler (1) (1 year- 2 years), toddlers (2) (2 years- 3 years). The “Language and Books” subscale of ITERS-3 was used based on pre and post evaluations, whilst several procedures were performed in between for improving the language communication of caregivers. These procedures included: providing a training course, applying the observation tool for two times, and using two focus groups. There were statistically significant differences in the mean scores for the “Language and books” subscale of the overall post-evaluation for all three observed classrooms. The research study concluded with a number of recommendations including: to improve caregivers language communication practices via holding training courses and workshops; and to include the most significant indicators of language communication practices along with the caregiver evaluation criterias by the administration for easing performance monitoring. Keywords: infant; toddler; ITERS; language communication; caregiver; quality.
