Study Aim: To investigate the influence of Early Clinical simulation on the academic performance of Fourth Year Medical Students in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Method: An experimental pilot study was conducted through a voluntary non-profit summer course for the third-year medical graduates. The study was carried out at the King Abdulaziz University hospital (KAUH), King Abdulaziz University (KAU), the Faculty of Medicine, and Jeddah-Saudi Arabia, in the summer of the academic year 2019. The data was first put into an excel file and transferred into SPSS 20.0 version. The percentage analysis was performed to find out the demographical information of respondents. Descriptive statistics are used to summarize the data. Variables are expressed as the mean ± standard deviation (mean ± SD). The Independent Samples t-test compares the means of two independent populations to assess if there is statistical evidence that the mean of the associated population varies substantially from the mean of the associated population.
Results: In current study, the majority 50.4% of the students were female whereas 49.6% of the students were male. The majority 69.8% of the students didn’t attend the pre-clinical summer course whereas 30.2% of the students have attended the pre-clinical summer course. In this study, the students who attended the pre-clinical summer course showed highest average of total mark (41.36±3.160), when compared to students who didn’t attend the pre-clinical summer course. The average of total mark was high (40.94±3.888) in female students compared to the male students. In male students, the average of total mark was high (41.37±3.382) in students who attended the pre-clinical summer course. Similarly, in female students, the average of total mark was high (41.36±3.012) in students who attended the pre-clinical summer course than students who didn’t attend the pre-clinical summer course.
Conclusion: In conclusion, students who attended the pre-clinical summer course obtained benefit than who didn’t attend the pre-clinical summer course. This study clearly demonstrates the early clinical simulation exposure significantly influence on the academic performance of Fourth Year Medical students. The early clinical exposure (ECE) of the preclinical, paraclinical and clinical faculty must be a concerted effort. It has the ability to increase motivation for learning and encourage deep learning, deeper comprehension and longer retention of information if implemented effectively.
